What is the one part of our body that is overworked every day and yet is always taken for granted?  Our feet!  We stand on them all day, often limiting shoes and other footwear, and more often than not, we don't meet the ordeal they go through.  But at the end of the day, we need to take care of our feet if we want to make our lives as comfortable as possible.


   Basic care


   Just as we wash our face and brush our teeth every day, it is essential to wash and take care of our feet.  It is important to wash them with warm water every day when we take a shower, also taking care to wash between the toes.  Soaping your feet and weekly scrubbing will also ensure that calluses are hard to form.  Maintaining this routine is essential to avoid bacteria, infection and odor.  You also need to moisturize your feet regularly with lotions and creams so that they don't get too dry.  Dry and dehydrated skin is always prone to cuts and more infections.

   Our feet are more susceptible to injury due to carrying our weight all day, constant use as well as the inevitable injury to our pinky toe with the dining chair.  The good news is that many foot injuries are minor and can be avoided simply by wearing the right shoes.  Blisters and calluses (a visible indicator of ill-fitting footwear) are all common problems.  One of the doctor-recommended ways to avoid foot pain and injury is to wear tight-fitting shoes and heels constantly.  Tight shoes can put you at risk for a bunion, a bony abrasion in the joint at the base of the big toe, which may require treatment if left untreated. 

Diabetes and the foot


   Diabetes is a very difficult disease to live with and often diabetics have nerve problems in their feet etc. First things first, make a habit of checking your feet daily for blisters, cuts, ingrown nails, and the like — remember, something common to most people may be a problem for you. Keeping your blood pressure under control also reduces the risk of poor blood flow and nerve damage to your legs, which can lead to leg numbness, ulcers and chronic infections.


   Our feet are the foundation of our bodies — we use them every day to walk our pets, play with our loved ones, and taking care of them long-term is important to avoid complications as we age. It's time to take care of our feet and take care of them.
